Sea Kayaks in the Surf


It is time to leave the controlled bays and enter the ocean. Learn to launch and land through the surf with control, safety, and finesse.

Any paddler looking for adventure is going to launch and land through the surf sooner or later. Leave your anxiety behind, and learn to control your kayak the right way- right side up. This clinic is geared toward sea kayaks and fishing kayaks.

Required skills:

Basic strokes, edging and bracing

Completion of flat-water perfection (recommended)

You Will Learn & Apply:

-Launching and landing strategies

-Low and high bracing

-Reading and assessing surf

-Sand rolling

-Utilization of tides

-Open ocean surfing (running with following seas)

-Proper gear and gear storage

-Etiquette

-Surf zone defense

This class is a prerequisite for LFK's Into the Sea, Intermediate and Advanced Coastal Exploration, and Rock Gardening.

Gear:

  • Kayak with proper flotation
  • PFD
  • Paddle
  • Spraydeck for closed decked kayaks and thigh braces for all sit on top kayaks.
  • Clothing for continuous immersion in 50' F water.
  • Water and a snack
  • Spare clothing in a dry bag to include a warm hat and warm tops and bottoms.
  • Boots, shoes or something that will stay on your feet during a swim.
  • Helmets that fit properly!

2-4 pm $40/person

$60/person if you need gear (kayak, pfd, paddle, helmet).

Prerequisite Essential Kayaking Skills Class or approval of LFK instructor
