Learning to paddle safely and efficiently will increase your confidence and paddling fun.

Wet-exit, self-rescue, and buddy rescue skills will improve your comfort at sea. Come out with us in a controlled environment and let's have fun tipping boats over. The more the merrier so bring a friend or two.

Eskimo rolling is not covered in this class. Check out our calendar for one of our swimming pool sessions for rolling or schedule a private roll lesson or tune-up.

Why: Increase your comfort and knowledge with rescues necessary for paddling at sea.

This course is a prerequisite for coastal exploration in a single sea kayak, essential kayaking skills II, rock gardening, eskimo roll, sea kayaks in the surf, and into the sea.

Who: Anyone interested in paddling a decked sea kayak in open waters. No previous experience is necessary for this class.

What: A 3 hour class with on land and on water instruction and application.

Paddlers will learn and apply concepts and skills involved in:

Self-rescues including wet-exit and swimming, cowboy/cowgirl and paddle float

T-rescue

Bracing Recoveries

How much: $80/person for Essential Rescue and Recovery Skills I (includes 3 hour class, kayak, paddle, life jacket, and spray skirt)

$135/person for Essential Kayaking Skills I and Essential Rescue and Recovery I

$10 for wetsuit rental

Where: Fort Bragg’s Noyo Harbor or other location by appointment

Gear:

Necessary:

*Kayak

*Paddle

*Life jacket

*Sprayskirt for decked boats or thigh straps for sit-on-top

***Wetsuit or drysuit for immersion in 52ish degree water

Footwear – wetsuit booties, lightweight tennis shoes, water shoes, sport/water sandals

 

Recommended:

Water

Light snack

Sunscreen

Hat w/visor

Retention strap for glasses/sunglasses

Warm dry clothes for after class

 

*Provided. If you use your own kayak and gear, deduct $20 from the class price.
