Welcome Into the Sea!

This four-hour lesson is to provide the individual paddler with knowledge and skills to become an asset to a paddling group. Each week will have a skill set of some sort but will vary on conditions and abilities of the entire group. Paddlers enrolled in this course are comfortable on flat water and becoming proficient with the performance of body boat blade. If you have ventured out onto the sea and are looking for a great place to practice your skills look no further as Into the Sea will enhance any paddlers skill level.

  • Week one: Towed rescues and other towing techniques, theory and practice different T-rescues and recoveries.
  • Week two: Winter paddling, cold challenge prevention, injured paddler rescues, becoming an asset to a paddling group.
  • Week three: 10 nautical miles tour, with problems.
  • Week four: Launching and Landings off different ocean launches, strokes at sea, and how the sea affects your kayak.
  • Week five: Bracing and rolling at sea.

Each week we will meet at a designated venue.

Gear list:

  • Kayak with proper flotation
  • PFD with at a minimum of a whistle, knife and power snack.
  • Paddle, spare paddle if you have one.
  • Spray deck for closed decked kayaks and thigh braces for all sit on top kayaks.
  • Paddle float
  • Bilge pump
  • Clothing for continuous immersion in 50’ water.
  • Water and a snack
  • Spare cloths to include a warm fleece like hat, warm dry top.
  • Boots, shoes or something that will stay on your feet during a swim.
  • Helmets that fit properly!
  • Tow system (optional but should be on your gear list)
  • VHF radio (optional but good to have per person) Cell phones work in most areas just offshore of San Diego and is a good resource to have.
  • 10 foot piece of line for knot tying practice.
